Director of Athletic Performance and Community Fitness

The Director of Athletic Performance and Community Fitness will direct and lead all aspects of athletic performance and fitness programming at St. Louis University High, with a focus on fostering a mission-based, engaging and high-energy environment through which growth and development will occur across the SLUH community in the areas of positive nutritional habits, injury prevention and physical fitness.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Leads a collaborative effort to prioritize and promote safety in our athletic performance and fitness activities, including the maintenance of our equipment and facilities.
  • Collaborates with varsity head coaches to engage and educate members of each coaching staff in the areas of focus related to performance training for student-athletes participating in the sport led by those coaches.
  • Connects with the athletic department, facilities director, and business office in regards to repairs and potential additions/upgrades to our performance training spaces and equipment.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Executes strategies for engaging members of the SLUH community in performance training and fitness activities so as to develop their mind, body, and spirit in accord with the School Mission Statement, the Athletic Mission Statement and the Grad at Grad document.
  • In collaboration with coaches, prepares athletic performance routines for student-athletes and oversees activities which execute those routines during activity period, lunch and after school.
  • Prepares fitness routines for members of the SLUH community and oversees activities which execute those routines during activity period, lunch and after school.
  • Provides instruction throughout the academic year and the summer, to individuals and teams, which is aimed at injury prevention and the development of strength, speed, agility and physical fitness.
  • Utilizes software and a variety of data-gathering processes to evaluate the effectiveness of the instruction in the areas of injury prevention and the development of strength, speed, agility and physical fitness.
  • Partners with the SLUH medical staff to report injuries and to play a role in the rehab routines of our community members.
  • Participates in coaches meetings, athletic department meetings and faculty meetings.
  • Engages in formation and professional development activities offered by SLUH, the Jesuit Schools Network (JSN), the NSCA, and other wellness and athletic performance organizations.
  • Provides support for school events such as open house, student retreats and athletic competitions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Possesses a thorough understanding of performance training and community fitness in a high school setting.
  • Utilizes an array of strategies on how to communicate and convey that understanding to the SLUH community, specifically our student-athletes and coaches at all levels of the athletic department.
  • Displays excellent interpersonal, leadership, and managerial skills.
  • Communicates, both verbally and in writing, effectively and appropriately with student-athletes, parents and coaches.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with the Google Suite of applications or related software, as well as performance training assessment software.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, sports science or a related field is required.
  • Two or more years of experience leading performance training activities for a team or an athletic organization
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) obtained through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience coaching, teaching and/or leading performance training activities at a high school is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and moving while leading weight room sessions, while leading speed room sessions, or while attending practices, games, meets, matches, and other competitions.
  • May have extended periods of time at a desk and/or in front of a computer.
  • Must be able to lift more than 45 pounds at a time in performing role-related duties.
