College Counselor

The College Counselor will assist students and families in the understanding and navigation of the college counseling process. They will support the students' applications through formal application materials and through personalized support. College counselors are focused on helping students reach their individualized goals, meeting them where they are while encouraging them to see all the possibilities. This is a 10-month position with some travel and occasional evening and weekend hours.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Counseling a caseload of Junior and Senior students and families.
  • Facilitate one-on-one meetings with students and families throughout the college process. Help families to understand and to navigate the financial aid and scholarship process.
  • Write letters of recommendation for all students on their caseload to support and advocate for them in the college admissions process.
  • Managing the school application materials sending for their caseload (Naviance).
  • Assist with standardized test administration and planning (PSAT, school day ACT).
  • Plan and facilitate college visits to SLUH throughout the Fall and Spring. Travel to build relationships with college partners throughout the country.
  • Participate in professional development, professional networks (i.e. NACAC, MOACAC, JHSCCA), and actively visit colleges to maintain a strong working knowledge of college opportunities for students.
  • Develop and deliver college counseling curriculum – both in classroom settings through a developing advisory curriculum and through ongoing family programming in the evenings and weekends.
  • Support student athletes in their recruitment process and with maintaining eligibility.
  • Advocate within SLUH for better understanding of the landscape our graduates will be moving into and work for policies internally that will best support our students.
  • Make a vibrant contribution to the school's co-curricular program and the spiritual formation of our young men.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior interpersonal skills with persons of all ages and across diverse backgrounds.
  • Presentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with college and school counselors and build relationships with other departments.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite / Google Suite / Zoom. Experience with Naviance and Canvas is a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • College admissions or previous college counseling experience.
  • School Counseling Certification welcome but not required.
