Choral Teacher

A Choral Teacher at St. Louis University High School serves the unique Catholic and Jesuit educational and formational mission of the school by designing and teaching choral classes, covering additional required supervisory, formational, and co-curricular responsibilities and fulfilling school expectations for ongoing professional and spiritual development. Specifically, the Choral Teacher will work with choral groups and competitions, as well as other possible activities including support for the school musical and liturgies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Plans and develops an engaging, age-appropriate course of music study, adhering to the school mission and philosophy, educational best practices as well as Jesuit and St. Louis U. High curriculum guidelines.
  • Designs and delivers individual lesson plans in the area of vocal music and piano courses using a variety of teaching techniques and appealing to various learning styles.
  • Prepares materials for lessons, assignments, and tests; evaluates, corrects, and grades student vocal performance.
  • Prepares and implements rehearsals and school concerts for the benefit of student assessment and engagement.
  • Monitors students' vocal progress throughout the year and evaluates knowledge, skills and competence in their performance.
  • Discusses academic difficulties or behavioral problems with students as they arise and reports specific challenges and plans for support to school leadership and learning resource personnel.
  • Provides support for character and spiritual formation as outlined in the document "The Graduate at Graduation."
  • Communicates progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as appropriate, other faculty, staff, and/or principal.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with parents and effectively communicates details regarding student progress and upcoming events.
  • Monitors halls, study periods, lunchrooms and covers other support tasks with other faculty and staff.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, Pre-Tenure formation programs, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, training seminars and ongoing retreat and spiritual formation activities.
  • Maintains knowledge of research, developments, and best practices in secondary education generally and Catholic and Jesuit education specifically.
  • Performs related tasks such as sponsoring student activities or organizations.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of the pedagogy and best practices of education, including Catholic and Jesuit educational philosophy and pedagogy.
  • Desire to teach secondary school-aged students, ability to adapt approaches to instruction and engagement their developmental status and willingness to embrace and support the Catholic and Jesuit identity and mission of the school.
  • Enthusiasm and dedication to continuing the tradition of high-level music-making.
  • Understanding and selecting appropriate repertoire for each ensemble and lead rehearsals in an engaging manner that prepares students for performances.
  • Proficient piano and accompanist skills required.
  • Enthusiasm for continuing the tradition of high-level music-making.
  • Experience in conducting and concert preparation.
  • Experience in preparing students for District Honors Choir, All-State Choir, and District Solo/Ensemble Contest preferred.
  • Ability to prepare ensembles for community and donor events preferred.
  • Ability to direct music for school theater productions preferred.
  • Ability to participate in liturgical music preferred.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control the classroom.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Creative analytical and problem-solving skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and state accreditation and licensing required; Master's degree highly preferred.
  • Ongoing maintenance of all requirements regarding professional courses and in-services required.
  • Prior teaching experience highly preferred.
  • Specialized training in teaching secondary students is preferred.
